How to Improve English Speaking Ability

Improving English speaking ability does not have to involve expensive courses. The most important part is simply to immerse yourself in the language. Initiate conversations in English. Watch television shows in which standard English pronunciation is used, such as the news. Listening to the radio is another option, since most hosts are hired based on their speaking abilities. The more the sounds and language patterns you hear, the easier they will be to remember. The more the sounds are spoken, the more naturally language will come to you.
Things you need:
TV
Radio

    · Instructions
    1. Speak English at home. According to the United States Census Bureau, research conducted on non-native English speakers in the United States has shown that using the language more often improves language ability.
    2. Improve pronunciation. According to the Internet TESL Journal article on "Teaching Speaking" by Hayriye Kayi, pronunciation involves producing the appropriate sounds in the foreign language. Search for "sound patterns." For instance, if a word ends with an "e," like the word "able," the vowel "a" will be pronounced as it is in the alphabet. But in a word like "fall" or "call," the "a" is pronounced "ah."
    3. Listen to the rhythm of language to begin to sound more like a native speaker. Kayi notes that improving English ability involves creating the appropriate "stress" patterns, or rhythm of the language. For instance, in the command "Go to the store," the stress in the sentence put on the last word, "store." In the command "Call me," the stress is put on the first word, "call."
    4. Practice using new words. If you encounter a new word in conversation, look up its meaning. Then try to use the new word later on in the day or week. This will help with practicing the use of words in the appropriate context, with the appropriate meaning.
    5. Study correct usage. According to Kayi, one of the things that can be improved with English speaking is eliminating extra words. The words that are used should be used in the right situations, with the appropriate meanings. For instance, being "excited" feels a lot like being "nervous." Both states might induce sweaty palms and racing hearts, for instance. But "nervous" tends to be used in more negative situations, "excited" in positive ones.
    6. Practice public speaking skills. Public speaking is an important part of improving speaking ability in English. It can help with getting a job, for instance, which requires being able to speak to an interviewer or a group of interviewers under relatively stressful circumstances. Public speaking skills are also required for school presentations. Practice by giving presentations in front of a group of friends who are also improving their English speaking skills. Try to maintain eye contact, speak smoothly without interruptions and learn to use flashcards only minimally, preferably not at all.
